6 Signs Your AC is on its Last Leg
If you feel that your air conditioner (AC) is on the way out, we have identified several signs that can help confirm your theory. The better news is that we can help provide a solution. Here are the six common signs that your AC needs replacement or repair:
1. Runs Continuously
An aging AC unit may run continuously if it can no longer keep up with your home cooling needs. Some of the common causes other than age are a plugged air filter, evaporator coil or condenser coil. While you can easily replace an air filter, refrigerant leak repairs can be costly.
2. Increased Home Humidity
A healthy AC unit should be able to manage humidity levels and remove humidity from your home. When an AC unit is nearing the end of its life, it will be unable to run efficiently, leading to noticeably higher humidity levels. Increased home humidity can also be caused by leaky ductwork and dirty evaporator coils.
3. Vents Blowing Hot Air
If your AC unit cannot cool your home, ensure the thermostat is on the right setting, that the air filter is clean and that the outdoor unit is unobstructed. If you are unable to identify the issue, it’s time to get an expert opinion.
4. Strange Noises
It’s normal for your AC to make noise during operation, but you’ve got a problem if you hear something strange. A new grinding or squealing noise usually indicates a failing blower motor or condenser fan motor, which can be repaired. However, a whirring noise may signal a failing compressor, which will require a replacement AC.
5. Odd Smells
There are many reasons why you may have an unpleasant smell flowing through your air vents. A musty smell could signify stagnant water or mold in your system. If you notice a burning smell, turn your AC off immediately and call an expert, as this could be an electrical issue.
6. Leaks
Excess moisture and leaks around your AC unit could indicate an issue with your refrigerant system. Ask a technician to check the condition of the condensate drain and pump, refrigerant levels, and drain line.
